Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) won't join former President Donald Trump's 2024 ticket if he were to lose his own presidential campaign, DeSantis said on a podcast on Tuesday.

"I don’t think I’m a No. 2 guy. I think I’m a leader, governor of Florida. I’ve accomplished a lot," DeSantis said on the Wisconsin Right Now podcast. "I think I could do more staying there than being VP, which doesn’t really have any authority.”

Trump and DeSantis are the top two GOP 2024 candidates, according to national polling. A RealClearPolitics average showed Trump at 53% of Republican primary voter support and DeSantis at 21%. All other candidates are polling in the single digits.

The Trump and DeSantis campaigns have increased attacks on each other in recent months, with the former president often bragging about his poll numbers over DeSantis. DeSantis has slammed Trump for what he says is a failure to deliver on conservative principles.

On the podcast, DeSantis claimed he would finish Trump's border wall on "day one" of his administration.

“Cartels cut through it. They’re literally bringing product into our country right through the wall," he said.

DeSantis also attacked Trump over his handling of COVID-19 because of Dr. Fauci's enhanced role during the pandemic.

“He turned the country over to Dr. [Anthony] Fauci. I think that was a big mistake," DeSantis said. “I would have fired Fauci because I think Fauci did huge damage to this country.”

The Florida governor did say that he would support the Republican 2024 nominee, and given Trump's front-runner status, there's a strong chance he will become the Republican Party's next standard-bearer.

DeSantis declined to say who he is considering to join his ticket, but he ruled out 2024 Democratic contender Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a candidate whom some conservatives have embraced.
