Newly-announced Republican presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has pledged to "reconstitutionalize" the federal government if he is elected to the White House.

"These government agencies are totally out of control," DeSantis said Wednesday during his announcement Twitter Space event. "There's no accountability, and we're going to bring that in a very big way."

"Part of the reason it's gotten so bad [is that] power has been consolidated, effectively a fourth branch of government, because Congress hasn't used its two main powers that it has under the Constitution," he added of "the power of the purse." "If an agency is engaging in conduct that is outside the realm of what is legal or you think it's not good for the public interest, then you can remove the funding for those operations."

DeSantis demurred when Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), an endorser, asked for examples of anti-big government reforms he would support, but he did back the REINS ACT as "a no brainer."

"That would, I think, be a great check for that," the governor said. "I also think that we're going to have a good chance to see some of the Chevron deference really curtailed or maybe even eliminated based on the U.S. Supreme Court's upcoming jurisprudence."

"That's another reason why the bureaucracy has become so powerful, because courts have basically been told they can pretty much do what they want and courts are supposed to just defer," he went on. "I don't think that that's actually correct. I think the courts, they have to make a judgment about what is the law."

The start of DeSantis' Twitter event was hampered by technological problems, which were quickly mocked by President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 nomination.
