NextImg:DeSantis is right about terrorist sympathizers

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) took a hard stance against foreign nationals in the United States promoting terrorism. Since the brutal Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel that left over 1,400 civilians dead, people have been protesting in major American cities in favor of Hamas.

“You see students demonstrating in our country in favor of Hamas,” DeSantis said during a campaign stop in Iowa. “Remember, some of them are foreigners.” The governor said he would be "canceling your visa, and I’m sending you home" if he becomes president in 2024.

Indeed, many attending these pro-Palestinian protests are celebrating both the murder of Israelis and their terrorist killers, not simply calling for policy change in Gaza. Students at George Washington University projected “glory to our martyrs” on the side of a library. Students at Harvard and Stanford have celebrated the attack by Hamas and said they hold Israel “completely responsible” for the bloodshed. There have been pro-Palestine demonstrations in 39 American cities, often full of swastikas and other antisemitic paraphernalia. “Make no mistake, we are in celebration,” a speaker told a crowd in the nation’s capital.

Democrats, who routinely attempt to silence the speech of anyone right of Karl Marx, are defending Hamas supporters on First Amendment grounds, as are many libertarians, but DeSantis is not calling for citizens to be silenced. He is merely stating that foreigners who support acts of terrorism should not be welcomed into the country. I would assume the vast majority of Americans would agree that immigrants who seek to assimilate and take part in the American experience are preferable to those who hold extremist, violent views toward Jews or any other group.

Unchecked migration from the Arab world does not lead to the multicultural utopia that leftists on college campuses desire. It leads to what is happening now across Europe. France has seen dozens of violent antisemitic attacks in recent weeks. Antisemitic attacks have tripled in the last year in the United Kingdom, including Kristallnacht-style vandalism of Jewish-owned businesses. A synagogue was firebombed in Berlin (yes, that Berlin) last week as German authorities attempt to control their nation’s rising antisemitism.

“It is unbearable that Jews are living in fear again today — in our country of all places,” German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said. In 2022, Europe took in 12.4 million refugees and 1.3 million asylum-seekers. Five million were civilians fleeing war-torn Ukraine, but still, a considerable percentage were from the Middle East and North Africa.

The neoliberals who run most Western nations, including our own, have prioritized inclusivity over protecting their citizenry for decades, and Jews, as they always seem to be, are on the business end of such decisions. The Left loves to quote Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Former President George W. Bush was wrong about a great many things. Among them was the notion that the Middle East is full of freedom-loving Jeffersonians who desire the kind of liberty America provides. DeSantis is right: If you like what Hamas did, and you’re here on a temporary visa, you should be shown the door. It’s alarming that this is even a mildly controversial opinion.
