Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) defended his crime policies in the Sunshine State in an impassioned response where he said he was not going to let someone "accuse me of committing criminal activity."

During a press conference on Thursday, the Florida governor was confronted by an individual who claimed that his policies had "hurt people" and allowed "weapons to be put in the streets" while alluding to the deadly racially motivated shooting in Jacksonville, Florida, last month. The August shooting left three people dead and was denounced by DeSantis.

“I’m not going to let you accuse me of committing criminal activity. I am not going to take that,” DeSantis responded.

The Florida governor then said the shooter in the Jacksonville shooting should not have had access to the gun he had under existing law, referring to the Baker Act, which allows for family members to have individuals suffering from mental health complications to be involuntarily sent to emergency services.

“He should have been ruled ineligible, but they didn’t involuntarily commit him," DeSantis said before the man interjected again, leading DeSantis to respond again.

"There is the truth, there is something about the truth, it’s not everyone has their own truth. You don’t get to come here and blame me for some madman. That is not appropriate, and I'm not going to accept it,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis then touted his record with law enforcement and pointed to lowering crime rates in the Sunshine State in recent years.

The Florida governor had the exchange during a press conference where he doubled down on preventing the reintroduction of any COVID-19 measures, such as lockdowns, masking, or social distancing.
