Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is scheduling the Florida legislature into a special session a week after President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office to help work with the incoming administration to accomplish its immigration goals.
Trump will be sworn in on Jan. 20, with plans for several executive orders and expected deportations of criminal illegal immigrants. DeSantis said at a Monday press conference that the state needs to “act quickly” after Trump takes office to help him enact his policies, noting that the president-elect “has a mandate.”
Today, I called for a special session of the Florida legislature the week of January 27 to prepare Florida to lead on the Trump Administration’s deportation program. We will allocate resources and ensure state and local officials in Florida are supporting these efforts.

“Today, I called for a special session of the Florida legislature the week of January 27 to prepare Florida to lead on the Trump Administration’s deportation program,” DeSantis said in a post on X. “We will allocate resources and ensure state and local officials in Florida are supporting these efforts. We have no time to waste. Florida must lead.”
The governor also said other measures should be considered during the session, including hurricane disaster relief.
“While we are in special session, we should also address key issues facing our state: ballot initiative integrity, disaster relief, and condominium regulations,” DeSantis added.
The special session to help the Trump administration is in contrast to actions by several Democrat-led states, such as California, which are preparing to fight the incoming administration on many key issues, including deportation.

As part of California’s efforts, the Democratic-dominated state legislature has reportedly agreed to a deal to spend $50 million combatting Trump’s immigration policies.
Florida’s special session on Jan. 27 will come a month and a half before the regular 2025 session begins on March 4. Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
