Three weeks after the events of Jan. 6, 2021, then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) visited former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

In an upcoming book, former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney reveals that McCarthy took that trip to console Trump, who was “depressed” and “not eating” after he left the White House.

CNN’s Jamie Gangel joined The Lead with Jake Tapper on Tuesday to analyze Cheney’s memoir Oath and Honor, which is set to be released Dec. 5, and detailed the visit she called a “stunning anecdote about Kevin McCarthy.”

“This is a lifeline,” Tapper interrupted to add context. “Everyone thought that the Republican Party was going to rid itself of Donald Trump. Everybody had spoken negatively about him, but then McCarthy does this and basically … from the ashes, Donald Trump is renewed.”

Cheney wrote in the book that when she saw the Jan. 28, 2021, photo of McCarthy and Trump, she thought it was fake. When she confronted McCarthy about it, he replied, “They’re really worried. Trump’s not eating, so they asked me to come see him.”

Incredulously, Cheney asked, “What? You went to Mar-a-Lago because Trump’s not eating?” to which he answered, “Yeah, he’s really depressed.”

Cheney, who represented Wyoming in the House for three terms and lost last year's primary election to pro-Trump candidate Harriet Hageman, wrote that she was not the only Republican lawmaker “angry and disgusted that McCarthy had gone running back to Trump.”

During the last 16 months of her tenure in office, Cheney served as the first and only vice chairwoman of the House Jan. 6 committee, whose final report blamed Trump for inciting the riot.
