Liberal lawmakers in Chicago are furious with how Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson has responded to tens of thousands of immigrants who have descended on the city after illegally crossing the border and are calling for the resignations of more than half a dozen city officials.

Democratic Aldermen Raymond Lopez and Anthony Beale, as well as Independent Anthony Napolitano, sent Johnson a letter Wednesday demanding the ouster of department officials who were responsible for a failed winterized tent camp for 2,000 immigrants. Illinois announced this week it had blocked Chicago from continuing after cancerous, toxic chemicals were found in the soil of the tent site.

"The City of Chicago needs individuals who are serious, deliberative and collaborative in addressing the ongoing migrant asylum-seeker crisis that began in August 2022 and continues to this day," the aldermen wrote in the letter. "What we have seen in Brighton Park, however, does not show members of your administration as being either serious, deliberative or collaborative in addressing this issue."

Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) intervened in Chicago's attempt to build in the Brighton Park neighborhood Wednesday and lambasted the Johnson administration for how it tried to shelter thousands of immigrants on unsafe land amid resident protests.

"While the City might be comfortable placing asylum seekers on a site where toxins are present without a full understanding of whether it is safe, the State is not. This site will not move forward as a shelter with State involvement," Pritzker said in a statement to ABC-7.

The aldermen lamented that the city had wasted an unspecified amount of taxpayer money after its "failed attempt to build on highly cancerous soil, without permits, without true community engagement, without a plan that is respectful to those whom so many performatively articulate sanctuary for in our city."

The site was nearing completion, according to photos taken by the Associated Press.

The city has yet to select an alternative site to house immigrants. More than 13,000 immigrants are housed in city shelters at present, according to ABC-7.

Johnson administration officials called to resign included Garien Gatewood, Beatriz Ponce de Leon, Lori Lypson, Alyxandra Goodwin, Cristina Pacione-Zayas, Maura McCauley, and Matthew Richards.

Lopez has been a leading voice in calling out the Johnson administration's response to the immigration crisis and announced earlier this fall that he was running for Congress to unseat Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-IL).

The immigrant crisis in sanctuary cities began earlier in the Biden administration as historically high numbers of immigrants came across the southern border and were released into the country as they awaited their court removal proceedings.

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) made a show in 2022 by providing buses for immigrants to take to cities including Chicago, New York City, and Washington, although most immigrants have chosen to pay for buses, trains, and flights to get to destinations across the United States where they have friends and family. The northern cities have become inundated with immigrants, unable to provide shelter for them as many immigrants continue to arrive daily.
