National Democrats are preparing to counter Texas Republicans’ possible mid-decade redistricting effort, which White House officials requested.

The largest super PAC backing House Democrats, the House Majority PAC, is creating a new fund with $20 million to target Texas’s House Republicans if state lawmakers pursue their plan to redistrict. The Texas legislature is in a special session, called by Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX), to address many issues, including possibly redrawing the district maps.

The funding, from the newly created Lone Star Fund, will go toward voter registration initiatives, advertising, and targeted investment with Hispanic voters.

“They should be scared and they should be vocal about being scared because they’re about to get a bunch of money dropped on their head,” House Majority PAC President Mark Smith said.

Additionally, Democratic National Committee officials said they will utilize 30,000 volunteers to make calls to “persuadable Republican Texas voters” in Republican-held districts to discuss the redistricting push, according to ABC News.

President Donald Trump, and in turn, Abbott, have instructed Republicans in the Texas legislature to consider redrawing the state’s congressional map and target solid blue districts. The push comes as the 2026 midterm elections look favorable for Democrats to win control of the House.

“Republicans know that the only way they hold onto the majority is by rigging the system but it won’t work,” a DNC spokesperson said in a statement. “Democrats will hold Republicans across the country accountable for their vote to rip away health care and food access and that starts with organizing from the ground up.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is planning to travel to Texas soon, according to the New York Times.

Abbott convened lawmakers for a special session to address the deadly flooding in central Texas and redistricting, among other items.

The Texas Republican Party hailed the inclusion of redistricting in the special session as “an essential step to preserving GOP control in Congress and advancing the President Trump’s America First agenda.” Members are expected to hold public hearings on the proposal for new maps in the coming weeks. They only have until the end of the 30-day session to vote through new maps.

Republicans have a 25-12 advantage over Democrats in Texas’s House delegation. Despite the state party’s stance, some Republicans have expressed concern that redrawing the maps for Texas House seats could backfire, according to the New York Times.

An analysis from the Cook Political Report warned the GOP that “demolishing blue seats in Houston and Dallas could put several of their own members at risk.”

REDISTRICTING BATTLES ERUPT AS TRUMP PUSHES FOR SAFER TEXAS GOP SEATS

Democrats leading blue states have also threatened to redistrict mid-decade in response to Abbott and Trump’s push. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said he is considering options to counter Texas.

Texas has not redrawn its maps mid-decade since 2003, which prompted a walkout from state Senate Democrats. Republicans still won in their effort, gaining a majority in the state legislature that they have held since.
