NextImg:Democrats shouldn’t be giving the ICC credibility - Washington Examiner

Democrats are going to the mat to protect the International Criminal Court, attempting to give more credibility to another anti-American institution than it deserves.

President Joe Biden “strongly opposes” the House GOP push to sanction ICC officials involved in the witch hunt against Israel for defending itself against Hamas terrorists. The Biden administration took this position despite also opposing the ICC’s desire to file charges against Israeli leaders, choosing instead some vague notion that “there are more effective ways” to discourage the ICC. Knowing Biden’s track record, those “more effective ways” are strongly worded letters.

The rot goes deeper in Congress, though, courtesy of Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA). According to him, “The International Criminal Court is an important institution, and those who care about human rights would certainly agree with that assessment. And I think that it is not in America’s moral or strategic interest to attack the court for attempting to do its job.”

The ICC is not an important institution, though. It is a corrupt, anti-American body that picks and chooses what “abuses” it wants to investigate, which is how it ends up equating the conduct of Israel targeting a terrorist organization with that of the terrorist organization that massacred 1,200 civilians, started the war the ICC wants Israel to stand down from, and is dedicated to antisemitic genocide.

Global institutions are not beneficial just by the fact that they are global, nor are they sacred. The United Nations has proven this time and time again. Just as with the U.N., the ICC has been corrupted by antisemitic, anti-American sentiments. It is a net negative for freedom and human rights. Democrats defending it and, worse yet, lending it credibility, as McGovern is, are doing far more damage to human rights and international order than Republicans who want to send a message that a war to kill terrorists is not equivalent to a terrorist war to kill civilians.

Some international organizations are worth defending, but many are not. The ICC is close to the top of the latter list. Democrats going out of their way to protect the ICC are degrading global stability under the mistaken assumption that “independent” global organizations are good just by their very existence, and that the United States should subject itself to the whims of those anti-American bureaucracies.
