Democrats have come down hard on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for moving into a Coast Guard building in Washington, where she does not pay rent.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) released statements Friday afternoon besmirching the Trump administration official for temporarily moving out of her home and taking up residence in the waterfront Quarters 1 residence at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.

“If Secretary Noem is living rent-free in military housing, she should be ashamed. Reports that she is also using Coast Guard executive jets for extensive personal travel and bossing around military personnel because she misplaced her favorite blanket are just as despicable,” Thompson, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, and McIVer said in a joint statement.

“Federal government coffers are not Noem’s personal piggy bank, and Coast Guard service members are not her servants. Noem must pay her part,” the two continued. “If she requires accommodations for her security, she should brief Congress and request appropriate resources—not take over property from the Coast Guard.”

McIver was arrested in May for assaulting a federal officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside a detention facility in New Jersey and indicted by a federal grand jury in June.

A DHS official blamed a media report that identified where Noem had an apartment in Southeast Washington, D.C., for her having to move temporarily to a safer location.

“Following the media’s publishing of the location of Secretary Noem’s Washington DC apartment, she has faced vicious doxing on the dark web and a surge in death threats, including from the terrorist organizations, cartels, and criminals gangs that DHS targets,” said Tricia McLaughlin, assistant DHS secretary, in a statement to the Washington Examiner Friday afternoon.

McLaughlin added that the relocation is temporary and that Noem continues to pay rent at her apartment building.

“It’s a shame that the media chooses sensationalism over the safety of people enforcing America’s laws to keep Americans safe,” McLaughlin said.
