President Donald Trump gave his first address of his second term to a joint session of Congress last night. Congressional Democrats were quick to show their displeasure.
Although Trump’s speech had aspects of a victory lap, there were plenty of chances for Democrats to show some sense of nonpartisanship. Instead, they refused to show any unity at every turn.

They refused to stand and clap, even for 13-year-old D.J. Daniel, who is battling brain cancer. Trump named him an official Secret Service agent, prompting cheers and applause from the Republican side of the floor and silence from Democrats.
Other moments of Democrat silence occurred when Trump announced the acceptance of high school senior Jason Hartley to West Point and when Trump honored the family of Laken Riley, a nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant.
It makes sense that Democrats don’t want to celebrate Trump’s tax cuts, immigration policy, or DOGE. These moments, however, were not supposed to be partisan and should have gotten recognition from both sides of the aisle.
Bipartisan applause is uncommon, but previous addresses usually get at least one round of it. Even Trump, in his 2020 State of the Union address, got applause from Democrats when honoring Charles McGee of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Several Democrats protested at the event in various ways, from a group holding signs that read “False,” “Musk Steals,” or “Save Medicaid,” to several representatives walking out in the middle of the speech, sporting shirts reading “No kings live here,” and “RESIST.” Rep. Al Green (D-TX) stood up and shouted at the president while waving his cane.
Green disrupted Trump’s speech within the first few minutes and when he would not sit down, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) ordered the sergeant-at-arms to remove Green from the proceedings.
While it is poor optics for the opposition to have an outburst at any time during a speech, Green’s timing was especially bad. Trump was in the process of saying he won the popular vote and a large majority of counties when Green interrupted. Of all the things Green could take exception to and “fact-check” Trump on, this is the worst, as it is absolutely and provably true.
Democrats attempted to make the event about themselves through their protests and virtue signals.
FOUR FEISTY MOMENTS FROM TRUMP’S ADDRESS TO CONGRESS
Some Republicans, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), spoke out against former President Joe Biden at some of his State of the Union addresses. Still, she did not disrupt the proceedings in any way that was close to what Democrats did yesterday.
Democrats often attack Trump for being divisive. Maybe it’s time they look in the mirror and not oppose something just because Trump said it.
