Rep. Mike Levin’s (D-CA) grandfather is a hero. The Democratic congressman publicly revealed this information last week in a post on X. Levin’s grandfather fought in World War II, volunteering to risk his life to fight against human civilization’s evilest empires.
Unfortunately, Levin made an ill-advised (and illogical) analogy (and virtue signal attempt) about his grandfather’s service, referencing it when commenting about the heated exchange at the White House between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Donald Trump. It was an embarrassing statement by a highly-educated elected official but also indicative of the obsession Democratic politicians have with the Eastern European country.
“My grandfather and the Greatest Generation didn’t fight in World War II to see our country side with murderous thugs like Putin,” Levin said. “This is a disgrace.”
However, the only disgraceful thing here is Levin’s historical inaccuracy. While it is true that Putin is a murderous thug, it’s also true that the U.S. sided with one during World War II – Soviet Union dictator Joseph Stalin. During World War II, the war in which Levin’s grandfather was a soldier, the U.S. was in an alliance with Stalin and the Soviet Union. And if people think Putin is bad, he doesn’t come close to the evil, murderous, villainous despot Stalin.
This isn’t a defense of Putin in any way. Nor is it a suggestion or possible justification for the U.S. to align itself with “murderous thugs.” The country should never do that, and Putin is indeed evil. However, this is just a historical fact. More importantly, it’s representative of the foolishly great depths to which Democrats will go in their Ukraine obsession. (It’s also probably an example of just how easily Democrats ignore and dismiss the sins, violence, and murders carried out by communists under the banner of communism, but that’s a topic for another time.)
Stalin was a murderous thug. He was one of the world’s preeminent murderous thugs, rivaled by only perhaps fellow communist dictators Mao Tse-Tung (China), Pol Pot (Cambodia), and German ruler Adolf Hitler. And yet, the U.S. sided with him. It was a humiliating self-own by Levin. Moreover, given Levin’s supposed concern for the welfare of Ukrainians, Stalin was responsible for the Holodomor, a mass famine purposely engineered by Stalin in the 1930s to kill millions of Ukrainians. It’s a fact that makes Levin’s statement even more foolish and illogical.
THE TRUMP-ZELENSKY MEETING EXPLAINED
Democrats have become unhinged around Ukraine, and Levin is a symptom of that party-wise plague. They have convoluted the morality behind believing that Ukraine should be defended from Putin’s aggression to using hyperbolic hysteria, rife with vilifications and demonizations against those who disagree with them and radically fictitious analogies to advance their points and objectives and agendas.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Democrats such as Levin can be honest and factual. He could make legitimate arguments as to why Russia is the evil aggressor, Ukraine is the victim, and why supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty is the right thing to do. However, if the congressman insists on trying to score cheap political points with inaccurate World War II analogies to critique contemporary geopolitical conflicts, he’s going to need to brush up on his history.
Maybe he needs to start with this book: World War II for Dummies.
