President Joe Biden is taking a single step toward addressing the border crisis. The shift angered congressional Democrats so much that they decided to broadcast how “disappointed” they are with the administration, showing once again that the Democratic Party simply wants no security at all at the southern border.
Biden’s new proposed rule would make it harder for immigrants to attain asylum unless they can prove that they were denied asylum in Mexico or another third country. It’s a relatively anodyne proposal, more of a half-hearted half-measure to try and prevent the border from being flooded with even more illegal immigrants with dubious asylum claims as Title 42 expires in May.

Former President Donald Trump tried to impose a similar rule, but it was blocked by federal courts, so it isn’t even clear if the rule would even be allowed to stand. That may even be Biden’s strategy, allowing him to claim that he tried to address the crisis but was stopped by the courts, and then turning to demand that Republicans pass his preferred immigration reforms.
But even the prospect of a rule that would prevent the southern border from being further overwhelmed has upset congressional Democrats. Sens. Cory Booker (NJ), Bob Menendez (NJ), Ben Ray Lujan (NM), and Alex Padilla (CA) said in a statement that they were “deeply disappointed” with the proposal and that it “only perpetuates the harmful myth that asylum-seekers are a threat to this nation.”
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has also cried foul over the rule. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), the chairwoman of the House Progressive Caucus, also issued a joint statement expressing how “deeply disappointed” they are.

In the meantime, border communities are still being overwhelmed. Liberal sanctuary cities are too, with Republican governors (and some Democratic ones) busing immigrants to places such as New York City, which have already admitted they don’t have the resources to handle a fraction of what small border towns are facing. There were just over 156,000 border encounters in January alone, and that came after nearly a year of over 200,000 encounters per month. The expiration of Title 42 in May could add up to 13,000 more per day.
None of this concerns congressional Democrats, though. In fact, they are perfectly fine with it, which is why they only ignore the border crisis unless they can find a way to demonize Border Patrol agents or attack Republicans. Even President Joe Biden simply pretending to care about the border crisis is enough of a threat to the Democratic Party's ideal of open borders for them to complain. There is no border restriction today’s Democratic Party would accept because Democrats now reject the concept of borders entirely.
