Several prominent Democrats slammed former President Donald Trump for reportedly asking top oil executives for $1 billion for his campaign in exchange for a rollback of environmental standards that he said hurt the industry.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) led the charge, saying Trump is “giving our planet away in return for cash” in a post on X referencing a Washington Post report. Newsom has been a consistent Trump opponent, differing with him on many topics, such as the advancement of electric vehicles.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) also rebuked Trump in respective posts on X.

“Trump’s backroom dealmaking with Big Oil is a pledge to fan the flames of the climate crisis,” Markey said. “It’s unacceptable. We can’t let Trump bargain away our planet and our future.”

Markey previously co-authored the Green New Deal with Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a piece of legislation some have called “aspirational” and that appeals to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party the most.

“Donald Trump has a deal for Big Oil: if they raise $1 billion and send him back to the White House, he’ll gut environmental protections and roll back [President Joe Biden’s] progress in fighting climate change,” Warren said. “It’s corruption, pure and simple. And it would be a disaster for our planet.”

Warren recently introduced the “BUILD GREEN Act,” which aims to “electrify and modernize the nation’s transportation infrastructure” and shells out $500 billion toward the initiative. Trump has attacked Warren with a notable jab, calling the Massachusetts senator “Pocahontas” for her disputed Native American heritage.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt responded to the New York Times’s own inquiry by instead slamming Biden, alleging he’s controlled “by environmental extremists who are trying to implement the most radical energy agenda in history and force Americans to purchase electric vehicles they can’t afford.”

Leavitt also said Trump is “supported by people who share his vision of American energy dominance to protect our national security and bring down the cost of living for all Americans.”

The outlet reported that executives from Exxon Mobil, EQT Corporation, and the American Petroleum Institute, as well as Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), were among about 20 people at the April 11 event coined as an “energy roundtable.”
