Democratic Senate candidate Hill Harper accused a Michigan businessman with ties to the nation’s leading pro-Israel PAC of offering him $20 million to drop out of his race and instead challenge Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in her primary.

Harper took to social media Wednesday to back up a report that a donor promised him financial support for a Tlaib primary challenge in mid-October, an offer he turned down. The donor, Linden Nelson, allegedly offered to split the campaign cash two ways, with $10 million going to Harper’s campaign directly and $10 million for independent expenditures.

ANATOMY OF A DEAL: HOW THE ISRAEL-HAMAS HOSTAGE NEGOTIATIONS PLAYED OUT

“I didn’t intend for a private phone call to turn public,” Harper wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “But now that it has, here’s the truth. One of AIPAC’s biggest donors offered $20m if I dropped out of the U.S. Senate race to run against @RashidaTlaib."

“I said no,” the progressive Democrat added. “I won’t be bossed, bullied, or bought.”

Nelson is a Michigan entrepreneur who has donated to candidates from both parties and has longstanding ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. He also has donated to a group trying to unseat Tlaib, one of Israel’s leading critics in Congress who has been vocally opposed to the country’s military response to the Oct. 7 terror attack by Hamas.

Repeated efforts by the Washington Examiner to reach Nelson for comment were unsuccessful.

Harper is an actor known for his role on ABC’s The Good Doctor, a show he just announced his departure from to focus on his campaign. He is running to the left of Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), a former CIA agent who is viewed as a competitive candidate because of her success in holding on to her swing district in the House for three consecutive cycles and her impressive fundraising network.

A Tlaib spokesman did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on the alleged offer, which comes as a growing number of her progressive colleagues face primary challenges over their stance on Israel. AIPAC plans to spend $100 million targeting anti-Israel members in their upcoming primaries.

Tlaib is the only Palestinian American in Congress and has led the charge on Capitol Hill to pressure the Biden administration and others in the party to back a ceasefire.

She has faced criticism, however, for some of her rhetoric, including her insistence on using the controversial phrase “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” It refers to the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, currently split between Israeli and Palestinian territories, and Israelis view it as a call for their eradication. Despite repeated public pleas for her to stop using the chant, she has refused.

The Oct. 7 massacre and Israel’s eventual response highlighted internal divisions within the Democratic Party.

A total of 22 Democrats joined almost all Republicans in voting to censure the Michigan congresswoman on the House floor earlier this month for “promoting false narratives” about Oct. 7 and allegedly calling for the “destruction of the state of Israel.”
