Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign during a House Oversight Committee hearing on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, arguing that criticism of the agency is not a partisan issue.
“I just don’t think this is partisan,” Khanna said. “If you have an assassination attempt on a president, a former president, or a candidate, you need to resign.”
He also asked Cheatle what former Secret Service Director Stuart Knight did following the failed assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan. When Cheatle said that Knight stayed on as director, Khanna corrected her and said Knight resigned in 1981.

Many lawmakers on the Oversight Committee are frustrated with Cheatle’s answers to questions, particularly as she deflected answers on details of the shooting and how the shooter gained access to a building close to the rally.
Several House Republicans and Democrats have called on Cheatle to resign. When Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) asked if Cheatle wanted to use her five minutes of questions to draft a resignation letter, Cheatle said, “No, thank you.”
