A Democrat in Virginia has launched a campaign for Rep. Jen Kiggans's (R-VA) seat in the commonwealth's 2nd Congressional District.
Missy Cotter Smasal is a "veteran, former small business owner, and mother," according to her campaign website. Kiggans is also a veteran, having served in the Navy.

Smasal features four issues on her website, including protecting abortion, supporting veterans, making schools safer, and bolstering the district's economy. Likely due to the district's divided political makeup, Smasal steered clear of some more controversial Democratic priorities.
“Missy Cotter Smasal is an extreme Democrat with a losing record who is the wrong fit for this district. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans is delivering support for service members' mental health and fighting to preserve Medicare and Social Security,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Delanie Bomar said in a statement.
Kiggans was elected to the House of Representatives in the midterm elections when she took on former Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria, who was originally elected in 2018. Luria served on the controversial Jan. 6 Committee, the only vulnerable Democrat to do so. Prior to the midterm elections, she said, "If I don’t get re-elected because of this, that’s OK.”

Luria lost to Kiggans by roughly 10,000 votes.
The Cook Political Report rates Kiggans's seat as "Lean Republican."
