Delta Airlines is updating its uniform policy and will no longer allow its employees to wear flag pins from countries that are not in the United States.

The news comes as Delta is receiving backlash from how the company handled a social media post regarding two Delta employees wearing a Palestinian flag. As a result, Delta has chosen to get not allow other country’s flags all together.

“We are proud of our diverse base of employees and customers and the foundation of our brand, which is to connect the world and provide a premium experience,” Delta said in a statement. “We are taking this step to help ensure a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for all.”

This week, Delta went viral on social media after a X user posted two flight attendants wearing Palestinian flag pins on their uniforms.

In a social media response that was quickly deleted, Delta said “I hear you as I’d be terrified as well, personally. Our employees reflect our culture and we do not take it lightly when our policy is not being followed.”

Some X users took issue with Delta using the word “terrified” to refer to the Palestinian flag. In a following statement, Delta said the response “was not in line with our values.”

Delta apologized for the “hurtful” post and said  the company “strive[s] for an environment of inclusivity & respect for all, in our communities & our planes.”

Neither flight attendant lost their job due to the incident and Delta said the pin was in line with their previous uniform policy. Delta said the person who wrote the social media post using the word “terrified” has “been counseled and no longer supports Delta’s social channels.”
