Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) said that President Joe Biden may be one of the few Democrats who could lose to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
In an interview posted on Sunday with CNN, Phillips elaborated on the logic behind his long-shot presidential campaign, which has been met with significant criticism from Democrats, who have largely united around the incumbent president. Phillips argues, however, that Biden is a major liability for Democrats.

“I think in 2020, [Biden] was probably the only Democrat who could have beaten Donald Trump. I think in 2024, he may be among the only ones that will lose to him. And that’s why I’m doing this,” he said.
Going further than typical criticisms of Biden's age, Phillips also attacked the president's record.
“Bidenomics is not working. It is actually the opposite. It represents inflation, high prices,” he said.
Phillips drew parallels between Biden and Jimmy Carter, who famously "got slaughtered" in the 1980 general election against Ronald Reagan. He also compared himself to Sen. Eugene McCarthy, whose run against President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 played a key role in the president's decision not to run for reelection.
“I do believe Johnson would have lost; it opened the door to Bobby Kennedy, who — had he not been assassinated — absolutely, I believe, would have won that election in 1968,” Phillips said. “And I think we need more of that kind of courage. People were willing to torpedo their own career, which I believe I’ve done.”

During the interview, Phillips said that there was no limit to what he would be willing to spend on his campaign. He also said that he could not "deny support from anybody" when asked if he would discourage super PACs from spending money on his campaign.
“You have to play by the rules until you can change them," he said. "I can’t deny support from anybody.
