NextImg:DC restaurants see downturn during Trump's federal crackdown

Restaurants in Washington, D.C., are experiencing a dip in online reservations following President Donald Trump’s actions to reduce crime in the city.

After Trump announced he would federalize the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy the National Guard, dining reservations dropped 16% last Monday compared to the same date last year, according to OpenTable data. Reservations fell as much as 31% last Wednesday. By Sunday, they were down by 22%.

Washington is tied with Kansas City for the highest reservation drop in August compared to the same month last year, per OpenTable.

The data contrast with Trump’s remarks about how his decision to clamp down on crime resulted in a safer dining experience for district residents.

“All I want is security for our people. But people who haven’t gone out to dinner in Washington, D.C., in two years are going out to dinner, and the restaurants the last two days were busier than they’ve been in a long time,” Trump told reporters on Monday during an Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Friends are calling me up, Democrats are calling me up. And they’re saying, ‘Sir, we want to thank you. My wife and I went out to dinner last night for the first time in four years, and Washington, D.C., is safe and you did that in four days,’” he said.

Trump shared an anecdote from another friend whose son went out to dinner one night in the past week.

“I said, ‘Would you have allowed that to happen a year ago?’” the president said, recalling the conversation with his friend. “He said, ‘No way.… What you’ve done is incredible.’ And I think the people realize it.”

During the same Oval Office meeting, Real America’s Voice reporter Brian Glenn supported the president’s argument by making a joke.

“I walked around yesterday with [Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), his girlfriend]. If you can walk around D.C. with MTG, the city is safe,” Glenn quipped.

Unfortunately for district restaurants, the drop in dining reservations came just before the start of Summer Restaurant Week on Monday. Based on the data so far, the decrease in seated diners may last through the week.
