Law enforcement increased the reward for information regarding the fatal shooting of 21-year-old congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym last week in Washington, D.C.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is offering $25,000, and the FBI will offer an additional $15,000 for a total of $40,000 for information that leads to the arrest or conviction in the murder of Tarpinian-Jachym.

Tarpinian-Jachym, a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, had been working as a congressional intern for Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS) since June. He was shot on June 30 near the Mount Vernon Square Metro station in Northwest D.C. around 10:30 p.m. He died in the hospital on July 1.

A woman and a 16-year-old boy were also injured in the shooting. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith called it a “tragic loss” and “unacceptable.”

“I will remember his kind heart and how he always greeted anyone who entered our office with a cheerful smile,” Estes said in a statement last week. “We are grateful to Eric for his service to Kansas’ 4th District and the country.”

Tarpinian-Jachym is not believed to be the target of the shooting. Police said the incident began with an altercation between two groups, during which several suspects exited a vehicle and started to fire at another group at the intersection of 7th Street and M Street.

Those with information about the shooting are urged to call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
