Exactly 10 years after the Heritage Foundation created its own news outlet to report stories the liberal media were ignoring, the Daily Signal said it is turning independent of its parent and planning to expand its coverage of “the TRUTH.”

Heritage Foundation’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to spin off the Daily Signal in a show of confidence for the operation.

Rob Bluey, executive editor and founding editor-in-chief, will serve as the Daily Signal’s president, and Katrina Trinko, the outlet’s first hire in 2014, will be the top editor.

“If we’re serious about saving America and creating a better future for the next generation, it requires an informed public,” Bluey told Secrets.

“We’re committed to making sure the Daily Signal does its part. Just as our name implies, we will be the signal that cuts through the noise to transmit the news quickly and simply,” he added.

The move comes as many readers and users are leaving left-leaning media sources, concerned about overt bias and uninteresting story choices. For example, the Washington Post over the weekend dumped its first woman chief editor amid a readership mutiny and pledged to turn to “service” journalism.

The Daily Signal’s bread and butter has been a mix of conservative policy stories and a focus on influential GOP figures presented without the overbearing bias left media have leaned into.

It has become an influential news source critical to conservatives, and its stories are regularly featured on right-leaning aggregators such as OffThePress.com and CitizenFreePress.com.

In explaining its outlook, the Daily Signal noted its 2016 coverage of the Trump victory. “Our hypothesis was correct. Outlets like the New York Times, the Washington Post, and NPR were shocked by Donald Trump’s victory in 2016. They never saw it coming because they never paid attention to the populist movement that propelled Trump to the White House,” it said.

The change is the latest under President Kevin Roberts, appointed in 2021. “The Daily Signal is delivering on that promise and poised for even greater success under its new structure and leadership team. If we are going to save the country, we need courageous media outlets — like the Daily Signal — that investigate stories and ask tough questions other legacy media outlets are failing to do,” he said.

The Daily Signal has 17 journalists on its team and is launching a yearlong fellowship program for aspiring journalists.

In explaining the changes, the Daily Signal said, “We will always tell you the TRUTH. That’s our promise.”
