A Muslim graduate at the City University of New York School of Law is facing widespread condemnation after her commencement speech included claims that Israel bombs funerals.

CUNY law school's graduating class selected Fatima Mousa Mohammed to speak at the school's graduation ceremony, which she took as an opportunity to condemn Israel, Zionism, and capitalism with fiery and controversial language that drew widespread outrage from Jewish groups and New York leaders.

"That this is the law school that passed and endorsed BDS on a student and faculty level recognizing that … as Israel continues to indiscriminately rain bullets and bombs on worshipers, murdering the old, the young, attacking even funerals and graveyards, as it encourages lynch mobs to target Palestinian homes and businesses as it imprisons its children … that our silence is no longer acceptable," Mohammed said during her speech.

Mohammed also described the New York Police Department as "fascist" and condemned CUNY for cooperating with the police department.

"The joy and excitement that fills the auditorium ... may it be the fuel for the fight against capitalism, racism, imperialism, and Zionism around the world," she said.

In a video of the speech, the crowd could be heard cheering Mohammed's words.

The speech was met with widespread outrage from prominent Jewish groups and leaders within New York City.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who delivered the commencement address at CUNY law school this year, tweeted that he was "proud to offer a different message" at the school's commencement from the one given by Mohammed.

"[A message] that celebrates the progress of our city and country, and one that honors those who fight to keep us safe and protect our freedoms, like my uncle Joe, who died at age 19 in Vietnam while giving his life for our country," Adams tweeted. "We cannot allow words of negativity and divisiveness to be the only ones our students hear."

The New York and New Jersey chapter of the Anti-Defamation League said it was "appalled" by Mohammed's speech.

"Graduations should be a place for all — not a time to denigrate students’ identities," the organization tweeted. "We are appalled to see such an egregious display of hostility toward 'Zionists' (which is how many Jews see themselves) and Israel in CUNY Law's commencement address. This is yet another example of the harm Jewish students experience on campus."

Luke Moon, the director of Philos Action League, a Christian organization dedicated to fighting antisemitism, told the Washington Examiner that Mohammed's speech was inappropriate and defamed the state of Israel.

“It’s unfortunate that while the students of CUNY Law School are celebrating the completion of three years of hard work, they had to sit through an onslaught of negative rhetoric and hate speech," Moon said. "Fatima Mousa Mohammed inappropriately used the platform given to her to defame the self-determination of the Jewish people and the state of Israel.”
