Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says he is up for the challenge Democrats will muster against him in his Senate reelection bid.

The Texas Republican said he is not worried about who the Democrats nominate to run against him in the 2024 Senate race in Texas, because that Democratic candidate will have massive funding behind them regardless. Cruz shared his assessment of his upcoming Senate election at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas on Saturday.

"At the end of the day, I'm not too worried about who wins it because whoever wins it — the Democrats could nominate a ham sandwich, and they're gonna raise $100 million to run against me," Cruz said.

Cruz also emphasized how he is taking the 2024 Senate election "deadly serious," while noting the tightness of his 2018 reelection bid.

"Texas is a battleground and I'll tell you we are taking this Senate reelections deadly serious. My last reelection, as you noted, six years ago was at the time, it was the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history. We were outraised, we were outspent three to one," Cruz said.

He stressed how the money raised by Democrats in the 2018 Senate race went to getting voters to the polls, leading his campaign to work to drive GOP voter turnout to match Democratic turnout.

Cruz is seeking a third term as senator from the Lone Star State, after winning in 2012 and narrowly defeating Democrat Beto O'Rourke in 2018. The 2018 Senate Race came in a "blue wave" year, where Democrats saw wins in several swing state elections, but Cruz was able to fight the tide and hold onto his seat.

When asked about recently acquitted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's comments about potentially running against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Cruz said he is "focused on 2024."
