The six-candidate Delaware gubernatorial race narrowed to New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, a Democrat, and Republican Mike Ramone after Tuesday’s primary, setting up a competitive race in which Democrats are favored to win.

The Associated Press called the race for Meyer at 9:02 p.m., a little over an hour after the polls closed. He defeated two Democratic challengers with 48.4% of the vote, with his closest challenger, Democratic Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, receiving 36.3%.

Hall-Long had received the endorsement from outgoing Gov. John Carney (D-DE), who was barred from running for reelection after serving two terms as governor, per state law. However, she was bogged down by accusations of corruption after an audit of her campaign finances found she did not disclose $298,000 in payments to her husband, who operated as her campaign treasurer and wrote the checks to himself.

Meyer led Hall-Long in the polls ahead of the primary, 27% to 23%. Before the audit of Hall-Long’s finances was dropped, Public Policy Polling found Hall-Long leading Meyer, 31% to 19%.

Two PACs spent $2.4 million combined either attacking Hall-Long or supporting Meyer this year, but Meyer told NPR ahead of the race that he wanted nothing to do with outside spending groups.

On the Republican side, the outlet called the race for Ramone at 8:52 p.m. Ramone won with 72.3% of the vote, with his closest competitor receiving 16.5%. The Cook Political Report rates the governor’s race as “likely Democratic.” Delaware has not had a Republican governor since 1993.
