Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), known for her fiery and outspoken demeanor, suggested she proved her competency for a top committee spot with at least one quality: her social media following.

Crockett told The Atlantic that there was one “clear person” in the Oversight Committee ranking member race who had “the largest social media following.”

“It’s like, there’s one clear person in the race that has the largest social media following,” Crockett said in expressing Democrats’ need for sharp communicators.

Crockett lost the four-person race to Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) in June. Reps. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) and Stephen Lynch (D-MA) also vied for the late Virginia Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly’s spot.

The Texas congresswoman has over 700,000 followers across her congressional and personal accounts on X and more than 800,000 on Facebook. Her next closest competitor of the four on X, Garcia, has 165,000 followers between his personal and congressional accounts.

She expressed frustration with how the Oversight Committee ranking member race went for her, saying a member was supporting someone other than her, even though “that person did the worst” in pitching themselves to the caucus.

Crockett said some colleagues were reaching out to her and asking for donations, but also wouldn’t even “send me a text back” about the Oversight Committee position.

Other illuminating facts from the profile include that the lock screen on Crockett’s phone is a photo of herself, that her abrasive style affects those around her and played a role in her failed Oversight Committee campaign, and that she tried to shut the “profile down” after she found out the journalist had reached out to House lawmakers without telling her first.

Crockett understands her role as a progressive agitator and the value of her counterpart, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), whom she famously feuded with. “Marjorie is not liked by her caucus, but they get her value, and so they gave her a committee chairmanship,” she said.

The lawmaker rose to fame after her “bleach-blond, bad-built, butch body” comment about Greene during an argument with her. She’s continued saying controversial things, like calling Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) “Gov. Hot Wheels.” Crockett said she was referring to the governor’s busing of migrants.

When asked by the Atlantic if she ever regrets her public comments, she said, “I don’t second-guess s***.”
