NextImg:Congress targets Mamdani's antisemitic promises prior to his elections

Zohran Mamdani, the self-avowed socialist who is likely to be the next mayor of New York, will decimate the Jewish community through his antisemitic rhetoric. After he promised last week to roll back the few safeguards put in place to protect the Jewish community, a bipartisan team in Congress entered the fight to stop him.

“Zohran Mamdani’s reckless attempt to roll back New York City’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism is shameful, dangerous, and completely disgusting,” Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) wrote in a statement his office shared with the Washington Examiner.

A MAYOR MAMDANI WILL FURTHER RADICALIZE THE LEFT

“Efforts to delegitimize Israel’s right to exist are antisemitic,” Lawler added. “Refusing to outright condemn the violent call to ‘globalize the intifada’ – offering only that you’d discourage its use – is indefensible. There are no two sides about the meaning of this slogan – it is hate speech, plain and simple.”

With every new poll bringing him closer to his electoral goals, Mamdani might be able to accomplish this. If he does, he will legally harass the Jewish community.

“Given the sharp spike in antisemitic violence, families across the Tri-State area should be alarmed,” Lawler wrote, adding that Mamdani’s promises are “dangerous” for the Jewish community.

Not only could Mamdani increase his antisemitic rhetoric once he lifts the restrictions already put in place, but his actions will propel antisemites to continue their harassment campaign against the Jewish community, including the already frightened communities on college campuses.

At institutions such as Columbia University, Jewish students already live in fear as they have already been subject to intense harassment, including being blocked from attending class, by their antisemitic and radical peers.

The tense climate at college campuses such as Columbia has only de-escalated in recent months because of legislative action like New York’s adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which results in grave consequences for those radical “activists.”

Members of Congress, however, have taken Mamdani’s promises as threats and have since resorted to legislative action to restrict Mamdani and protect Jewish citizens before he takes office.

Lawler, along with Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), reintroduced the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which was passed in the House of Representatives last year but died in the Senate. The bill would enshrine the IHRA definition into federal law to ensure that the Education Department has the resources to combat antisemitism. The bill, which so far has 87 co-sponsors, might be adopted federally, which could prevent Mamdani’s hate speech from being protected if he follows through on his promise of dismantling it in New York.

After his promise to take down the IHRA definition of antisemitism, Mamdani vowed to arrest Israeli leaders if they set foot in New York.

Mamdani’s acceptance of political oppression toward Israeli leaders highlighted his opposition to the Israeli community in New York. The arrest of political opponents is only seen in authoritarian countries governed by socialist radicals.

To counter his efforts, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) introduced the Sovereign Enforcement Integrity Act last week to prevent the radical mayoral candidate from exercising real political oppression.

“Antisemite Communist Zohran Mamdani pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu if he came to NYC,” Stefanik said in a news release. “The United States is not part of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and their antisemitic States.”

The bill aims to preempt state and local law enforcement from exercising Mamdani’s order unless allowed by federal law.

DEMOCRATS BREAK RANK, ADMIT COLLEGES FUEL ANTISEMITISM

These legislative actions could be significant because they could override Mamdani’s plans, which are out of a communist playbook. However, they will only be effective if adopted by Congress and signed by the president.

The time for Congress to act is now. Mamdani is inches away from presiding over the largest Jewish community outside of Israel as mayor of New York, and he will continue to inflict damage on it if Congress fails to reinforce the few safeguards that can immobilize the antisemitic radical.
