NextImg:Colorado teachers union just voted for Marxism. Who is teaching your children?

What sort of people are teaching your children?

It's not a frivolous question nowadays. Between the distance learning of the pandemic era and their own oversharing on social media, it has become evident that extremists have hijacked the education system from kindergarten right through graduate school.

IT'S A PROBLEM WHEN THE GOAL OF SCHOOL MEALS IS NO LONGER JUST TO SERVE STUDENTS IN NEED

The latest evidence of this comes from a secretive vote held late last month by the Colorado Education Association, the union that represents 39,000 teachers in the Centennial State. It is telling that they went to such lengths to conceal what they had voted on: a resolution condemning "capitalism" for its "exploitation of children, public schools, land, labor, and/or resources," and calling for the establishment of "a new, equitable economic system."

Ultimately, the unionists involved in this conference adopted a resolution almost identical to this one. They were a bit more careful with the language they actually adopted, but it's still completely unhinged:

"CEA believes that capitalism requires exploitation of children, public schools, land, labor, and/or resources. Capitalism is in opposition to fully addressing systemic racism (the school to prison pipeline), climate change, patriarchy, (gender and LGBTQ disparities), education inequality, and income inequality.

So they omitted the part about the "new, equitable" system, but we all know what they meant. And we know why they were sneaky about it, too. Fox News reports that they "had previously decided not to disclose the resolution, citing 'process' and privacy concerns." But it became public in part because at least one communist-adjacent activist did not get the memo:

Frankly, this kind of ignorance is inexcusable for people pretending to be educators. The history of socialism is accessible to all and well-known. Children should be able to benefit from learning about the tens of millions dead, the untold amounts of suffering it has caused, and the joy and elation at the fall of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of socialist oppression. Anyone interested in anti-capitalism should also be taught the history of Ukraine — that country is in the news right now, after all — and the obvious lies that the Soviet authorities constantly embedded in their propaganda, just like today's Russian aggressors and the Chinese "Wolf Warrior" diplomats.

This ignorant rejection of free markets and embrace of socialism is extremely scary in people supposedly responsible for educating children. Because the truth is that capitalism, known to non-Marxists as the free market, is what actually funds the school system in all 50 states. It makes everyone's iPhone possible and pretty much every material good you enjoy today.

Sometimes companies exploit children, it's true. That's part of the reason we have labor laws, and companies are limited in what they can advertise to children. But free markets make children's lives vastly better, saving them from hunger and poverty all over the world. The abandonment of socialist economic policies (in Eastern Europe and China especially, and more recently in India) has been lifting billions of people out of poverty since the late 1970s.

But never mind all that. The real question is, why are weird extremists who revel in discredited ideologies dominating the education of Colorado's school children to the point that such a resolution could pass?

These educators are poster-children for homeschooling. Again, the union's leadership would not have tried to conceal this vote from the public if they had not known that they were doing something wrong. Similar extremists have taken hold of teachers unions in states across the country. If your child's teacher belongs to the CEA, you should consider other options.
