An adjunct professor at St. Phillip’s College in San Antonio has been fired for teaching that sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes.

Dr. Johnson Varkey, a human anatomy and physiology professor for more than 20 years, claims that he was let go due to his " religious preaching." On June 20, First Liberty , a religious law firm, sent a letter to the college declaring their actions unlawful. The firm is asking for Varkey to be reinstated immediately.

Around the country, other college campuses are facing similar problems. Thomas Sowell, a prominent conservative figure and economist, summed up the education system in one sentence: "Education is not merely neglected in many of our schools today but is replaced to a great extent by ideological indoctrination."

Top line: Higher education in America is under attack.

College was once considered a place of higher learning — where new skills were fostered and young adults further educated. However, college is all too often now a place where such pursuits are subjugated. Multiple courses at universities across the country are teaching young adults to reject so-called outdated ways of thinking. In Varkey’s case, even proven scientific evidence is considered offensive.

During my time as a university student, I experienced my fair share of left-wing bias. In a recent instance, my curriculum required me to take a class with which I strongly disagreed. I painfully sat through a course on the sociology of sex and gender. I was taught that these terms were sociological constructs created by the alleged patriarchy. Different theoretical approaches were taken to understand the intersectionality of gender.

However, there was one problem — the course material failed to provide proper education based on real research. The overload of false information was overwhelming and confusing. The lines between masculinity and femininity became blurred. I sat in class attempting to understand the lecture, but everything I believed to be right was under attack. The course material vehemently denied biology and relied on the professor’s feelings and opinions alone.

The professor restated the view that sex and gender no longer mean the same thing and biological differences now cease to exist. She even made unrelated comments bashing Christians. Men were portrayed as the source of all the world's problems.

Students who dared to ask questions or challenge her were immediately shut down. Any attempt to engage further failed because her replies made no sense. Her arrogance and aloofness strongly indicated she had no respect for students' opinions. The course became her personal political stage, and we, the students, became her sounding board.

My intention is not to attack free speech but to express concern that education has been sidelined in favor of pushing a political agenda. College should be a place where students can put their own reasoning into practice. Unfortunately, they are being spoon-fed political beliefs and told that independent thinking is offensive.

We cannot expect everyone to share the same opinions and beliefs, but those who teach our children must be held to a higher standard. Sharing ideas and imposing them on students are two separate things. The very ideals and principles our nation was founded on have come under attack from within, targeting the most impressionable minds.

It is disappointing to see colleges like St. Philip’s bow to the woke mob and silence those such as Varkey for teaching facts. One can only hope that the outcome of this incident will be a win for those who believe in truth.
