As CNN struggles in the ratings, the network is now shifting some of its on-air talent in an attempt to boost viewership.
The left-leaning cable news channel has had a rough year. In June, Chris Licht stepped down from his position as CNN's CEO after just over a year on the job. Licht replaced Jeff Zucker in 2022, who was ousted from the network after it surfaced that he engaged in a romantic relationship with another CNN executive. A number of on-air personalities, including Don Lemon, also departed.

Now, the network is making way for two new hosts in the prime-time slot on weekday evenings, giving Abby Phillip, CNN's senior political correspondent, and Laura Coates, the network's chief legal analyst, shows on the weekday evening schedule.
Phillip's show will air at 10 p.m., and Coates's show will air immediately after at 11. p.m. Erin Burnett, Anderson Cooper, and Kaitlan Collins will keep their slots of 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m., respectively, according to a press release from the network.
"By expanding the range and depth of our programming lineup across multiple dayparts, we are strengthening our reporting excellence throughout the schedule, elevating our ability to tell great stories across platforms, and doubling down on CNN’s position as the most trusted name in news,” a statement from CNN's leadership team said.
The new show by Phillip will be based in New York, while Coates's show will be based in Washington, D.C. The latter show will feature legal, social, political, and cultural stories and will utilize Coates's experience as a prosecutor.

CNN has also altered its weekend schedule, including a new show hosted by former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace. In addition to this new show, Wallace will continue hosting his current show, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? Meanwhile, Manu Raju will anchor Inside Politics on Sunday, which was previously anchored by Phillip.
The changes made to CNN come after Warner Media, the owner of the network, was purchased by Discovery, with both companies merging to become Warner Bros. Discovery. The company's CEO, David Zaslav, has attempted to reform CNN as a more centrist news outlet.
