CNN analyst Van Jones argued that President Joe Biden has not yet secured the support of young voters ahead of the 2024 election, which is partially due to the “miserable” economic prospects these people are facing.

Jones had been asked about recent polling data that found former President Donald Trump ahead of Biden among voters ages 18-29, with the former president at 46% and Biden at 43%. Trump is also just behind Biden among Hispanic voters by only 3 percentage points in the poll, with Jones suggesting that the new data should be “a wake-up call” ahead of the election.

“Young people are upset, and it’s not just the situation in Gaza,” Jones said. “The economic prospects for young people are miserable. And that‘s been building under Obama. It’s been building under Trump. It’s building under Biden. We just do not have a pathway for young people to be able to pay off their student debt, get a house, people are looking at this AI wave and are worried about what job, what career path, and so that pain has to be spoken to directly and specifically.”

Jones added that six months ahead of the election, younger voters have not yet heard “a full-throated approach” from the Biden administration. While the president has provided some “symbolic peace” with this voting group with student loan forgiveness, it has not been enough to win this group over yet.

It is not the first time Jones has spoken unfavorably of Biden and his reelection bid, suggesting earlier this year that the president “doesn’t inspire confidence” and should remain “hidden” ahead of the election. While he argued that Biden has helped the economy and union members, the president is “not a great messenger for himself.”

A separate poll from earlier this month found that more recipients trust Trump, the presumptive presidential nominee for the Republican Party, more than they trust Biden on multiple topics facing the nation, including the economy, inflation, border security, and gun violence. Both the economy and inflation, along with safety from crime, were listed as the most important topics among the recipients of the poll.

During Trump’s massive rally in New Jersey held over the weekend, the former president vowed to replace “Bidenomics,” a term coined by the Biden administration, with “MAGAnomics” should he return to the Oval Office in 2025. Trump pointed to how the average New Jersey family has lost $23,381 in the last three years due to the “Biden inflation tax.”
