Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell had to be whisked away by security when a group of climate protesters interrupted a speech he was delivering on Thursday.

The disruption occurred during a monetary policy discussion panel at the Jacques Polak Annual Research Conference in Washington, D.C. As Powell was speaking, live video feed showed a few people storming onto the stage and shouting.

The video cuts out right as a security guard puts his arms around Powell and begins to guide him off the stage and presumably to another room for his safety.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is escorted off stage after climate protestors interrupted his speech at the 24th Jacques Polak Research Conference at the International Monetary Fund on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 in Washington.

“Thank you, thank you very much,” Powell appeared to say as he was moved away. “Just close the f**king door — close the door.”

The audio feed was then cut off as well.

It is unclear from the video what the protesters were holding, although one could be heard shouting about climate change at the beginning of the interruption.

“Chair Powell, by refusing to treat climate change that it’s a systemic risk you are putting us at risk of economic disaster,” one woman was heard on the microphone saying.

The disruption lasted a few minutes before the panel resumed and Powell returned to the stage to applause from the audience.

“OK, where was I — inflation was coming down,” Powell said, prompting laughter in the crowd.

This isn’t the first time that the Fed chairman has been interrupted by climate activists. Powell was set to deliver a key policy address before the Economic Club of New York last month, and when he was introduced a group of protesters began shouting about oil and gas financing.

“Off fossil finance, Jay, off fossil finance,” the protesters chanted. That address was also being broadcast live, and organizers at the event quickly dimmed the lights as the group walked onto the stage.
