Clemson University banned the use of TikTok Monday for any device using the school's network.

"This step allows the University to protect institutional resources and information while safeguarding the privacy of a wide variety of devices connected to the Clemson network," the South Carolina school said in a statement, according to a report.

The Chinese-owned social media app is not available for use on Clemson's eduroam and wired Wi-Fi network, the report noted.

Students and staff are now only able to access the platform on their personal data plans.

Clemson's policy change on TikTok was first alerted to students via email on July 7, and the move follows Gov. Henry McMaster's (R-SC) banning of TikTok on government-managed devices over security concerns.

"Federal law enforcement and national security officials have warned that TikTok poses a clear and present danger to its users, and a growing bipartisan coalition in Congress is pushing to ban access to TikTok in the United States," McMaster said.

At least 34 states have TikTok bans akin to the one in South Carolina, the report noted.
