The deadline to file for class-action lawsuit settlement benefits for customers who purchased Hefty or Great Value recycling bags is in less than two weeks.

What is the lawsuit about?

A lawsuit was filed against Reynolds Consumer Products, which owns Hefty and Great Value, for falsely advertising the bags as recyclable. The lawsuit, filed in Illinois’s 19th Judicial Circuit Court, alleged that the trash bags can’t be recycled in waste disposal facilities.

The Reynolds brand did not admit to any wrongdoing in the case but agreed to pay $3 million to resolve the claims.

Who is eligible?

Consumers must have purchased certain Hefty and Great Value trash bags between July 20, 2018, and Aug. 30, 2023. A full list of qualifying products can be found online, as outlined in the Gudgel v. Reynolds settlement.

How much money will I be issued?

Those who file a claim with proof of purchase can file for up to 25 products, with a maximum payment of $50. Those who do not submit any proof of purchase can claim up to six products, with a maximum payment of $12.

How can I file a claim?

The claim form submission is limited to one per household. Those interested in receiving settlement payments must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 13. The settlement was approved during the final approval hearing on Nov. 15.
