The owner of the Batiste hair product line settled a $2.5 million class-action lawsuit over claims its popular dry shampoo product contains carcinogen benzene. Those who have used or bought a Batiste Dry Shampoo may be able to receive compensation.

Here is everything to know about the class-action lawsuit.

NEARLY ALL MAINE RESIDENTS HAVE DATA STOLEN IN CYBERSECURITY ATTACK

What is the lawsuit about?

In 2022, Batiste, along with other dry shampoos, was cited in a report in which the products contained benzene. The findings came from an independent lab, Valisure, which tested over a hundred samples from 34 different dry shampoo brands, including Batiste. The research group found that 70% of the samples tested contained toxic levels of benzene. The Food and Drug Administration has a limit of two parts per million on the chemical.

Plaintiffs argued this exposure to the chemical found in Batiste aerosol cans heightened their cancer risk. The owner of Batiste Dry Shampoo, Church & Dwight, has denied all wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle the lawsuit.

Who is eligible?

People who purchased one or more Batiste Dry Shampoo items before May 30, 2023, could be eligible to file a claim.

How can I file a claim?

No proof of purchase is necessary to file a claim, which can be completed here by Nov. 15. But those who can provide proof of purchase for Batiste Bare and Clean or Batiste Light Bare products may receive a full refund.
