A CIA official was charged with leaking classified documents last month that appeared to show details of Israel’s military and their plan to retaliate against Iran.

The official, Asif Rahman, was indicted last week in federal court, and he’s facing two counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information, according to the New York Times. He was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia and was brought to Guam to face charges.

Last month, two documents purportedly from U.S. government agencies — the National Security Agency and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency — on Israel‘s military began circulating online.

They were posted by a Telegram account in mid-October called “Middle East Spectator,” and the documents are marked top secret and have markings indicating they are meant to be seen only by the US and its “Five Eyes” allies — Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The CIA declined to comment.

The FBI, which is responsible for investigating alleged violations of the Espionage Act, acknowledged last month that it was investigating the leak and said the agency was “working closely with our partners in the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community,” a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner at the time.

The leak of the two documents came at a heightened moment of tension in the Middle East, when Israel was considering how to respond militarily to the barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles fired at it from Iran on Oct. 1.

Israel’s ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon against Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which are beneficiaries of Iran’s backing, have created a rift in the U.S.-Israel alliance over how Israel conducts their wars.

The Department of Defense changed some of its policies regarding access to classified information after a young air National Guardsman was arrested and charged with leaking hundreds of classified documents over several months. The Massachusetts Air National Guardsman, Jack Teixeira, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a federal judge on Tuesday.

“The documents and information Teixeira posted to social media are highly classified and contain vital national defense information. By posting intelligence products on the social media platform Discord to feed his own ego and impress his anonymous friends, Teixeira caused exceptionally grave damage to the national security of the United States,” the Justice Department said in its sentencing memorandum filed to the court. “The scope of his betrayal is breathtaking.”
