MSNBC anchor Chuck Todd announced Sunday was his last time hosting Meet the Press.

Todd, 51, has hosted the program for nine years. Now, the longest-running news program on television will have Kristen Welker, 47, at its helm as the second-ever female host and first black host.

MEET THE OBAMA-APPOINTED JUDGE WHO HOLDS GOOGLE'S FATE IN HIS HANDS

"On my first day at my job on Meet the Press, I was handed an audience survey of Sunday show viewers, and the No. 1 reason folks said they tuned in was not because of who the person was behind the chair or the guest. It was simply to get educated," Todd said of the show. "So for nearly a decade, I’ve had the honor of helping to explain Washington to America, and America to Washington, as Kristen just quoted me about, and it’s that education piece that I’m hanging my hat on for the rest of my professional life."

"I just want to say I am also so thankful and grateful to you for this moment for entrusting me with this monumental, important role. I take this responsibility so seriously," Welker said. "I’m ready because you have helped me get ready, Chuck. You are someone who invests in the people that you care about, and you have invested in me, and I am so eternally grateful for that."

"There's a reason we’ve all used the word custodian — all the previous moderators — it is, again, you’re the moderator of the longest-running show on television," Todd told Welker. "You don’t want to be the last moderator and hand it over when you hand it over, I’m sure it will be in a better place than you have it today."

Todd will remain with MSNBC past Sunday. It remains to be seen in what capacity he will appear on the network's programs.

Welker was previously the chief White House correspondent for NBC News and Co-Anchor of Weekend TODAY. While working for MSNBC, she moderated the second presidential debate in 2020.
