FBI Director Christopher Wray claimed he had "total confidence" in the team investigating the pipe bombs that were placed outside of the Republican and Democratic national headquarters on Jan. 6, 2021, despite no arrests being made.

Fox News host Brett Baier on Tuesday asked Wray how the FBI, which has been investigating the pipe bombs at the headquarters for over two years, has not made any arrests and whether he believed an arrest related to the bombs would ever happen.

Wray, who was nominated to the position by former President Donald Trump, avoided answering about arrests or suspects but responded that the FBI has devoted resources to the investigation, which has not concluded.

FBI Director Christopher Wray listens during a news conference at the Department of Justice in Washington, Friday, Jan. 27, 2023.

"I will say that I have enormous confidence in the team, the dedicated team that is focused exclusively on that investigation, and we have devoted loads and loads of effort into that specific investigation," Wray told Baier. "We have done publicity and calling for the public’s help. Our folks are working very, very hard on that investigation. And those folks, those FBI agents, analysts, and professional staff, I have total confidence in them."

Baier also asked Wray whether the FBI placed informants or undercover agents in the riot at the Capitol. The question centered on the conspiracy theory that Ray Epps, a Jan. 6 rioter who allegedly encouraged people to enter the Capitol complex illegally, actually worked for the U.S. government. Epps has denied any ties to the government, claiming he only worked for the government when he was a Marine.

Wray responded that there was "nothing" he could say about the theory about Epps but said his inability to answer the question should not be construed as a "clue or hint in any way about how accurate your reader's tweet is."

Other topics in Baier's wide-ranging interview included discussion over the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, the investigation into Hunter Biden's laptop, and whether there is politicization within the FBI.

The FBI, along with the Justice Department, has conducted a thorough investigation of the events of Jan. 6, when a mob of Trump supporters descended on the Capitol to stop the certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election. The investigations have resulted in the arrests of nearly 1,000 protesters.
