NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo criticized the “lack of reaction” many in the press have had over the second attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and made a call to unite the country amid growing tensions.

The most recent attempt on Trump’s life, the second in about two months, occurred while the former president was golfing at his West Palm Beach golf course Sunday. The suspect was hiding in bushes with an “AK-47-style rifle” before fleeing the scene, according to law enforcement. Cuomo revealed Monday night that he called the former president to check on him, adding that he was really bothered by the “lack of reaction” to the latest assassination attempt.

“‘Oh, but the guy didn’t even shoot,’ what if it was your father?” Cuomo asked. “Or what if it was Kamala Harris, or President Biden? God forbid. You think that it would be almost a shoulder shrug and more talk about the Secret Service and allocation of funds than just how crazy it is that this is what’s happening in our country? That reaction of ‘well, come on, don’t make too much of it,’ he had an AK-47 pointed at him! The reaction is unacceptable, and it’s the second time media and political players have gotten away with playing down what should be a cause for panic.”

Cuomo referenced a statement he had been told by a mentor and friend who sent him a piece claiming the solution to the division in the country is “to split it,” to which he promptly rebuked such a possibility. He argued such a scenario would “never work,” referencing Patrick Henry’s “united we stand, divided we fall” statement and that this mindset is “even more true today.”

In regards to what’s provoking the nation’s division, Cuomo claimed, “The blame for the dynamic is everywhere.”

He added that people have been pointing fingers at each other instead of at themselves for raising the temperature in the political climate, and that people looking at themselves is “the only thing that’s going to change it.”

Cuomo also detailed the phone call he had with Trump, stating he “just wanted to know how his family’s taking this,” as he grew up concerned about his own father’s safety. He added that part of the reason he made the phone call was how he was “ashamed” over the public’s response to the threats Trump faces.

In the wake of the second assassination attempt on Trump, President Joe Biden argued: “There is no place for political violence.”

He also stated the country has “suffered too many times the tragedy of an assassin’s bullet,” and stressed a need to prevent future actions of political violence.
