NextImg:Chris Christie gets heated in Newsmax interview surrounding his 2024 chances

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie claimed his campaign still has a chance against Donald Trump to a doubting Newsmax anchor.

Host Eric Bolling asked Christie on The Balance Thursday about his campaign strategy of attacking Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination for president. Bolling pointed to Christie's polling and implied he might want to change his strategy to increase his popularity.

TRUMP’S BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT COULD ALSO FUEL HIS 2024 DEFEAT

“No, it’s not time to change the strategy. The guy who’s 20 points ahead is the guy you have to beat to be the nominee, Eric,” Christie responded. “And that’s why I think the Haley and DeSantis strategy is so ineffective, and why Ron DeSantis is now in single digits in New Hampshire, because he’s not making the case against the one person you need to beat if you want to be the Republican nominee for president.”

The former governor was referring to a CNN poll released on Thursday reported in New Hampshire Haley at 20%, Christie at 14%, and DeSantis at 9%. Trump maintains the lead in the GOP field with 42%.

Bolling claimed to disagree, calling himself "a numbers guy." According to the anchor, unless something happened in Trump's personal life, Christie's chances were "insurmountable." When Christie pointed to Trump's various cases against him, Bolling interrupted to suggest that "liberal Democrats that are trying to take him down" are behind the cases. Christie responded that Mark Meadows' testimony would cooperate with these pending cases.

“Come on. Don’t interrupt me when I start to say things that make people uncomfortable,” Christie said. “I’m not a numbers guy, by the way, Eric. I’m a character guy,” Christie continued. “And I think we deserve better as the Republican Party and as the United States than a guy who is going to be convicted of felonies this April to be our nominee.”

Christie is one of seven Republican candidates for president. He claims he has qualified for the fourth GOP debate.
