Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has demanded President Joe Biden do what he can to secure the southern border of the United States, citing the recent arrest of Danelo Cavalcante to make his point.
Cavalcante, a 34-year-old Brazilian national who was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend, was arrested on Wednesday by Pennsylvania police after he escaped from prison two weeks ago. Roy stated that with Cavalcante, the U.S. is "getting a glimpse" of what Texas has had to deal with and that he is trying to motivate his colleagues in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, to act on border security.

"The president doesn’t care," Roy said. "And Mayokas doesn’t care. But I care, and I think a growing number of Republicans care. But you will know whether they care on September 30, if they stand on the wall like those brave men did at the Alamo and forefathers have done if they stand on the wall and say 'Enough, Mr. President. You going to come down here and you're going to answer to us because we have the purse strings.'"
Roy also asked his Republican colleagues to ask themselves when they will say "enough is enough" and deliver on the promise of border security that they campaigned on. The Texas congressman warned that congressional Republicans will be "a total and complete failure" if they do not hold Biden accountable for the border.
"Secure the border or you shouldn’t fund the Department of Homeland Security," Roy said. "More and more of my colleagues are starting to understand that. Unfortunately, some Senate Republicans are still hand-wringing around with shutdowns. The American people are tired about that Beltway speak. They want their country back. That’s what this is about."

In August, Roy told Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to "do your job," adding that he is not going to just "give him a blank check." The congressman claimed that Mayorkas has been lying about security along the southern border and that Texas is "under assault every day."
The federal government faces a shutdown after Sept. 30 if Congress does not pass the required spending bills.
