"At close range, shots were exchanged between the offender and our officer who is now deceased," Brown, who resigned Wednesday following the loss of Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot, said.
Despite being wounded, Vasquez-Lasso, who had been an officer for five years, returned fire and shot the 18-year-old suspect in the head, according to a report.
The suspect is in critical condition and is reported to have had at least one prior violation.
"He died while protecting Chicago and its people," Chicago Police said in a Twitter statement.
