Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson continued to buck Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a pledge not to cooperate with them on Tuesday.
Johnson held a press conference Tuesday, during which he responded to the MacArthur Park raid in Los Angeles. A caravan of armored vehicles, National Guard troops, Border Patrol officers, and ICE agents arrived at the park, an immigrant hub, in an apparent operation.

“The city of Chicago, like all cities across America, will have to be far more thoughtful and even innovative in how we approach the federal government period,” Johnson said.
“Our local police department will not ever cooperate with ICE, whatever their constitutional authority is,” Johnson added.
Johnson referred to ICE as a “militarized force” that President Donald Trump is wielding to accomplish his immigration policy.
This press conference comes months after Johnson joined mayors of other sanctuary cities, such as New York, Denver, and Boston, at a House Oversight Committee hearing. Every mayor stood by their policies to oppose ICE efforts.
The White House issued a veiled response in a press release after Johnson’s conference that did not name him specifically.
BASS CONFRONTS IMMIGRATION OFFICERS AT LA PARK, DEMANDS WITHDRAWAL
“The brave men and women of ICE are under siege by deranged Democrats — but undeterred in their mission,” the release reads. “Every day, these heroes put their own lives on the line to get the worst of the worst — criminal illegal immigrant killers, rapists, gangbangers, and other violent criminals — off our streets and out of our neighborhoods.”
Violence against ICE agents has increased this calendar year. Most recently, a gunman in tactical gear opened fire on a Border Patrol facility in Texas. The gunman was fatally shot, with no other reported deaths.
