The governing philosophy of voters in Democrat-run cities is that the liberal Democrat mayor they have is terrible, so they must replace them with another liberal Democrat. Unsurprisingly, doing the same thing over and over again hasn’t produced different results.
A new M3 Strategies poll puts Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s approval rating at just under 7%. Nearly 80% of Chicago residents disapprove of Johnson’s job performance, which has been defined by his pro-criminal rhetoric, a surge in illegal immigration that he invited with Chicago’s sanctuary status, and his incessant race-baiting. Most recently, Johnson planned to put Chicago on the hook for $830 million in borrowed funds for a spending plan that would allow him to funnel funds to his teacher union buddies in the middle of a negotiation with Chicago Public Schools.
The worst thing about Johnson’s mayoral disaster is how predictable it was. Chicago tossed aside Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a liberal disaster in her own right, and turned to the even more liberal, even more race-obsessed Johnson. By February 2023, the month of the election, Lightfoot’s approval sat at 27%. She didn’t even make the top-two runoff, winning just under 17% of the vote. Chicago residents sat through Lightfoot’s disastrous tenure full of failures born of her leftwing ideology. And then, they decided to elect someone further to the left.
Lightfoot was the further left replacement of former Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who had been President Barack Obama’s chief of staff. In December 2015, not even a year after his reelection, Emanuel’s approval rating was at 18%. Chicago voters saw the disaster that was Emanuel’s tenure and replaced him with the more left-wing Lightfoot in hopes of solving the city’s problems.

Chicago is a failing city defined by its homicides. Voters again and again go to the polls facing the failures of their Democratic leaders and elect a new set of Democratic leaders, typically ones who are even more committed to the destructive liberal ideology of the party. Chicago has been run by Democrats since 1931 and has progressively gotten worse, and yet voters are content to just slot in the next Democratic option to inevitably fail.
Chicago voters have until 2027 to consider whether they want to actually change the city for the better or just want to promote another Democrat to run the same failed playbook. Chicago could shake its dismal reputation and become more livable for residents, but only if they quit choosing to run headfirst into the same wall every election cycle.
