


Several law enforcement officers were wounded after being shot at in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday, law enforcement said.
Officers in the U.S. Marshals task force in the city were conducting an investigation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in East Charlotte when two suspects fired on them, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. The officers have been transported to the hospital.
The officers were trying to serve a warrant in the area when the shots were fired. A deputy U.S. marshal who was struck by gunfire has died, according to local outlet WSOC. At least one of the suspects is believed to be wounded.
Several roads have been closed to accommodate victim transport, and a SWAT team is at the scene. Some Charlotte schools went into lockdown due to the shooting. The scene was still active as of 4 p.m.
Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) reacted to the situation, posting on his X account, “I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help.”
Democratic and Republican candidates to be the state’s next governor tweeted their condolences, as did Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Ted Budd (R-NC).

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department referred the Washington Examiner to its X account when asked for comment on the incident. “We ask that residents in the neighborhood continue to shelter in place,” the department said at 3:43 p.m.
