The district attorney in Louisville, Kentucky, has dropped all charges against professional golfer Scottie Scheffler after he was arrested at the PGA Championship earlier this month.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said he would not be moving forward with the case and filed a motion to dismiss the charges, calling them a “big misunderstanding.” Scheffler was arrested after being suspected of dragging a police officer with his car while arriving at the golf club for the championship.

“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office can not move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler,” O’Connell said

“Mr. Scheffler’s characterization that this was a ‘big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence. The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective [Brian] Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler. However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses,” he continued.

Some areas of entrance to the course were blocked off due to a pedestrian being fatally struck by a bus earlier that day. Scheffler was reportedly driving a marked player car and attempted to enter the course where he was stopped by a police officer.

“Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground,” the report said.

He faced multiple charges including the second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.

Despite the arrest, Scheffler made his tee time at the championship.
