U.S. Central Command released footage Wednesday morning of a fighter aircraft shooting down a Houthi-launched one-way attack drone.

The U.S. military is continuing strikes against the Houthi rebels, who have fired retaliatory drones and missiles at U.S. forces in the region.

“U.S. Fighter aircraft shoot down Iran-backed Houthi one-way-attack drones with AGR-20 FALCO Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) Laser Guided 2.75″ Rockets,” CENTCOM officials said on social media.

The APWKS II air-to-air capability was first employed last year “as one of many options for countering the Houthi [uncrewed aerial systems] threat,” a U.S. official told The War Zone in January. “It is a lower-cost option compared to the AIM-9X. That lower cost is one of the benefits of using it.”

The U.S. military has conducted dozens of airstrikes targeting the Houthis’ infrastructure and their arsenal in Yemen since Saturday. The military campaign, U.S. officials have said, is designed to get the Houthis, a Yemen-based Iranian ally, to stop attacking vessels transiting the waterways off the coasts.

The military had carried out several iterations of strikes against the Houthis since their attacks began in the aftermath of Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack in Israel. Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, the Joint Staff Director for Operations, told reporters Monday that the current operation includes “a much broader set of targets” and that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to delegate strike authority to operational commanders has allowed for a faster “tempo of operations.”

He also noted that the Houthis’ retaliatory attacks had been easily intercepted.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION WARNS IRAN OVER PROXIES’ CONTINUED BEHAVIOR

The Houthis have fired one-way attack drones and missiles at commercial vessels near the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea dating back to late 2023, which the group said was in solidarity with Palestinians in light of the Israel-Hamas war. But the Houthis have targeted ships regardless of any connections to Israel.

The threat of having ships come under attack has led to a significant reduction in the number of commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea. Instead, companies have chosen to divert their ships on a much longer and more expensive route around the southern tip of Africa.
