Officers with Customs and Border Protection arrested two people in the last week, with one wanted for sex crimes against children and the other having a prior arrest regarding a homicide, authorities said.

The apprehension of the former occurred Sunday at the Anzalduas International Bridge when a CBP officer had 40-year-old Jose Ramon Hinojosa Garza referred for a secondary inspection, according to a Tuesday CBP release.

“After escorting the traveler to secondary, biometric verification confirmed his identity along with an active arrest warrant from Bexar County Sheriff’s Department,” the release read. “Hinojosa faces charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony in the state of Texas.”

A 38-year-old Haitian national was also taken into custody on Friday at the Hidalgo International Bridge, and officers soon discovered that he “had a prior arrest regarding a 2010 homicide in Dominican Republic,” according to CBP.

“As a result, he was detained and placed under removal proceedings,” according to the release.

Port Director Carlos Rodriguez from the Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas lauded officers for their ability to spot and detain the two men.

“CBP officers screen all travelers entering the United States, and that screening resulted in two significant apprehensions,” Rodriguez said. “These arrests reinforce and illustrate our officers’ commitment to keeping our communities safe.”
