Cash App creator Bob Lee was reportedly stabbed to death near downtown San Francisco early Tuesday morning.

San Francisco police responded to a report of a stabbing at 2:35 a.m. and discovered a 43-year-old man suffering from "apparent stab wounds." The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

Sources told NBC News and multiple outlets that the man was Lee, who was also the former chief technology officer of Square.

While police did not name the man, Josh Goldbard, chief executive of MobileCoin, said in a series of statements on Wednesday that "my heart is broken tonight," and he praised Lee's legacy, without specifying his cause of death.

"Bob was so much more than a technologist. Bob was an artist," Goldbard said. "Everywhere he went Bob breathed love into this world. He had so much deep heartfelt love. Traveling with Bob was like seeing the world for the first time."

"I will never forget Bob. There will never be anyone quite like him," Goldbard continued.

Other tributes to Lee poured in on social media, with former UFC/MMA fighter Jake Shields tweeting, "I just found out my good friend was killed last night while walking him in San Francisco."

"RIP brother #bobLee," Shields said.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk responded to Shields, saying he was "very sorry to hear" of Lee's death.

"Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately. Is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders?" Musk said.

Mayor London Breed ran her campaign platform on cracking down on crime and has said she is committed to doing so throughout her tenure as mayor. In December 2021, she declared a state of emergency to bring down overdose deaths and violent crime in the Tenderloin, one of San Francisco's most drug-infested and poorest neighborhoods.

The city is one of several major U.S. cities grappling with a rise in the homeless population and overall high crime rates. In 2022, the city reported 48,633 total crimes. The overall violent crime rate remained lower than it was in 2019, the last year before crime rates in the city began shifting downward, with 2,393 aggravated assaults and 51 homicides in 2022.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the San Francisco Police Department for confirmation of the victim's identity.
