The star of the newest Marvel superhero film said Captain America should not represent the United States, suggesting the hero represents other values.

Anthony Mackie, who stars in the film Captain America: Brave New World, made the comment in a recent interview, and it gained traction online Monday evening.

“For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations,” Mackie said. “It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor and dignity and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”

Mackie said he believes actors want to help people return to using their imagination in the same way they did in their childhood and that making the film helped him accomplish this.

The actor’s comments on Captain America were met with criticism online, with podcast host Dan Bongino calling the film “another s*** movie I won’t be seeing.” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) also suggested that families in the U.S. “need to realize Disney is not for us.”
